Setting

“Yona of the Dawn” is set in a fictional kingdom named Kouka, drawing inspiration from East Asian culture. The story unfolds in a fantasy world where the kingdom was established 2,000 years prior by the Crimson Dragon God, Hiryuu. Over time, the kingdom has been divided into five distinct tribes: Sky, Earth, Water, Wind, and Fire. The once-thriving nation has succumbed to corruption and avarice, leading to widespread unrest and political instability.

Plot

The narrative centers on Princess Yona, who experiences a sheltered existence within the Crimson Dragon Castle under her father’s pacifist reign. Her sole companions are her childhood friend, Su-won, and her loyal bodyguard, Hak. On the eve of her sixteenth birthday, Yona declares her love for Su-won, but her father prohibits their union. That same night, Su-won orchestrates a coup, resulting in the murder of King Il, Yona’s father.

Compelled to flee with Hak, Yona embarks on a quest to reclaim her kingdom. Guided by an exiled priest, she learns of the legendary four dragon warriors who once assisted King Hiryuu. Determined to locate these warriors, Yona endeavors to restore Kouka and protect her people from both internal and external dangers. Throughout her odyssey, she transforms from a sheltered princess into a resilient and capable leader.
