Setting

Darling in the Franxx is set in a bleak, dystopian future where humanity teeters on the brink of extinction, threatened by monstrous, giant creatures known as klaxosaurs. The scattered remnants of civilization have been forced to retreat into vast, mobile fortress-cities called Plantations. Within these isolated urban environments, children, referred to as “parasites,” are artificially created and meticulously trained from birth to pilot colossal mechas known as Franxx. These young pilots are raised in strict isolation, devoid of individuality, personal history, or knowledge of the world beyond their controlled existence. Their entire purpose is to defend humanity, and they are required to operate in specially paired boy-girl units to pilot the formidable Franxx and engage the klaxosaur threat.

Plot

The story of Darling in the Franxx centers on Squad 13, a group comprising ten elite parasite pilots. The primary narrative thread follows Hiro, code-named 016, once a promising prodigy pilot who has fallen from grace after losing his ability to synchronize with a partner, leading to his expulsion from the pilot program. His life takes a dramatic turn when he encounters Zero Two, code-named 002, a legendary and highly dangerous elite pilot with distinctive klaxosaur blood. Known as the “Partner Killer” due to the alarming mortality rate of her previous co-pilots, Zero Two is an enigmatic figure. During a violent klaxosaur attack that disrupts Hiro’s graduation ceremony, he unexpectedly becomes Zero Two’s new partner, a fateful encounter that reignites his desire and passion for piloting. The series delves deeply into the evolving relationship between Hiro and Zero Two, exploring their complex bond amidst the pervasive dangers of their world and the existential threats that loom over humanity.

Main Characters

Hiro (016): The protagonist. Once a celebrated prodigy pilot, Hiro grapples with severe self-doubt and a loss of purpose after his synchronization ability mysteriously vanished. His encounter with Zero Two offers him a chance at redemption and a renewed sense of purpose.

Zero Two (002): An elite, enigmatic pilot with klaxosaur blood flowing through her veins. Her fearsome reputation as the “Partner Killer” precedes her, yet she forms an unusual and crucial bond with Hiro, challenging the established norms of piloting and human relationships.

Goro (056): A level-headed and dependable member of Squad 13. He is a childhood friend to both Hiro and Ichigo and harbors unrequited feelings for Ichigo, often acting as a steadying influence within the group.

Ichigo (015): The determined and responsible leader of Squad 13. Fiercely protective of her friends, especially Hiro, she struggles with her own feelings and the complexities of leadership in a world that demands unwavering obedience and sacrifice.

Zorome (666): A boisterous and ambitious boy within Squad 13. Zorome harbors a strong desire to become an adult and often provides comic relief with his overconfident pronouncements and energetic personality. He is partnered with Miku.

Miku (393): Zorome’s partner in piloting. Miku possesses a strong and vibrant personality, and she shares a close, often playfully tumultuous, bond with Zorome.

These characters navigate their intricate relationships, personal struggles, and the existential threats posed by the klaxosaurs, all while living under the oppressive societal structures that dictate their lives.
