Setting

The 1971 Kamen Rider manga is set in a world under the pervasive and menacing shadow of the evil organization Shocker. This sinister global entity engages in nefarious activities, prominently featuring the abduction of unsuspecting individuals. These unfortunate victims are then subjected to horrific experiments, transforming them into grotesque mutant cyborgs in Shocker’s relentless pursuit of world domination. This oppressive backdrop establishes a constant landscape of conflict between the resilient forces of humanity and Shocker’s monstrous, technologically augmented creations.

Plot

The narrative centers on Takeshi Hongo, a bright and promising biochemistry student. His life takes a dramatic turn when he narrowly escapes Shocker’s insidious brainwashing attempts, subsequently becoming the first Kamen Rider. Empowered by his newfound abilities and driven by a burning desire for justice, Hongo dedicates himself to waging a fierce war against Shocker’s clandestine forces. His ultimate goal is to thwart their nefarious plans for global domination and dismantle their oppressive empire. The story delves into profound themes of heroism, the ultimate sacrifice, and the relentless, often brutal struggle against overwhelming evil.

Main Characters

  • Takeshi Hongo: The protagonist and the original Kamen Rider. A biochemistry student who, after escaping Shocker’s control and undergoing a terrifying transformation, becomes humanity’s first line of defense against the organization’s sinister agenda.
  • Hayato Ichimonji: The second Kamen Rider. Initially, Ichimonji was a Shocker agent, also subjected to their experiments. However, he eventually regains his conscience and sense of self, choosing to join Takeshi Hongo in the critical battle against their common enemy, Shocker.

It is important to note that this manga adaptation diverges significantly from the television series in its plot development. These divergences are particularly evident in the distinct fate of Takeshi Hongo and the fundamentally different nature and intensity of the battles fought against Shocker and its monstrous operatives.
