Master Genryu (Age 71) – Year 2047 [The Dream Code]
Master Genryu listened intently, his gaze unwavering. When Mitsu finished, the elder closed his eyes. A profound stillness settled over the room. He reached for a ring on his right hand, a simple band set with a single, deep red stone. As his fingers brushed against the stone, it began to glow with an inner luminescence, casting a soft, crimson light across his aged face.
A faint warmth emanated from the ring, growing steadily. Master Genryu’s breath hitched, and a sheen of sweat appeared on his brow. The surrounding air seemed to shimmer, and the ambient light in the chamber intensified, focusing on the glowing ring and the Master’s serene, yet strained, expression. It was as if the very essence of the stone was awakening, reaching out not to Master Genryu’s ears, but to something deeper – his soul. A silent current flowed, a cascade of images and emotions that Mitsu could not perceive but could feel vibrating in the air. The ring whispered its secrets directly into Master Genryu’s spirit, translating the desperate plea of Mitsu’s dream into a language of pure understanding.
When Master Genryu opened his eyes, they held a new depth, a sorrow tinged with a flicker of profound recognition. He looked at Mitsu, not just as a boy with strange dreams, but as a harbinger.
“2025,” Master Genryu murmured, his voice now carrying a weight Mitsu had never heard before. “The whispers you hear, Mitsuru-kun, they are echoes from a future that must not come to pass. The destruction of 2044… it was not an accident. It was a consequence. A tragedy that could have been averted.”
He took another slow breath, his gaze fixed on the glowing ring. “Your dreams are not mere fantasies, child. They are a calling. A desperate message sent backward through time by those who foresaw the doom.”
Master Genryu then rose, his movements slow but purposeful. He led Mitsu to a secluded section of the Grand Hall, a space usually kept private. Here, arranged in a precise circle, stood a series of ornate, full-length mirrors. They seemed ancient, their surfaces reflecting not just the present chamber, but also a strange, flickering distortion, like heat haze on a summer road. In the center of the circle, the air began to crackle with energy.
The great cataclysm of 2044,” Master Genryu explained, his voice resonating with solemnity, “claimed countless lives. Almost all of humanity perished. Among them were those who held the potential to forge a brighter future, lives that were tragically cut short before they could bloom. We were billions in number. Now, we here in this city and a few others scattered across the globe are the only ones left. Your mission, Mitsu, is to go back—to the year 2025—and save a few of them. They are special for reasons beyond my capacity to explain.
The energy in the center of the mirror circle intensified, swirling into a vortex of light and sound. It pulsed, drawing Mitsu’s attention completely.
“But time travel,” Master Genryu continued, his eyes meeting Mitsu’s, “is a delicate art. We cannot simply send you back as yourself. To ensure the timeline is altered without causing paradoxes we cannot control, you will enter the past through a unique transference. You will inhabit the body of someone living in 2025.”
Mitsu’s eyes widened. “Inhabit? What does that mean?”
“It means,” Master Genryu said, gesturing towards the swirling portal, “that you will become someone else. Your consciousness, your memories as Mitsu, will merge with theirs. You will live their life, navigate their world, and from within that existence, you will guide events towards a different outcome. The person whose body you will occupy… his name is Kanzaki Tahiru. He is a 37-year-old writer living in Tokyo. He is a kind soul, but shy, struggling with his finances, and not one to easily connect with others. When you merge, Kanzaki’s consciousness will be transferred here, to your body, in 2047.”
The portal hummed louder, beckoning. It was an incredible, terrifying prospect. To live as a stranger, in a world he had only seen in fragmented dreams, a world he wasn’t even born into yet. A 37-year-old man, no less.
“It will not be easy, Mitsu,” Master Genryu warned, his gaze kind. “You will need to adjust to a new identity, new experiences, and a world that is vastly different from the one you know. Your memories of Kanzaki will blend with your own, but his life will be your reality for the time being. You must find those who are destined to perish and bring them to safety, to this city.”
Master Genryu placed a hand on Mitsu’s shoulder. “This is our hope, Mitsu. Your courage, and the wisdom of those who sent this message back, are our only chance to rewrite history. Are you ready?”
Mitsu looked at the swirling portal, the mirrors reflecting a thousand distorted possibilities. He thought of the girls in the forest, their desperate whispers. He thought of the hopeful eyes of the villagers. He thought of the bleak future he had narrowly escaped. A profound sense of duty, heavier than any fear, settled upon him. He nodded, his resolve firm. “I am ready, Master Genryu.”
