The Cave [The Dream Code Universe]

✦ The Cave ✦

“Hidden beneath the mountains, three thousand people waited for the world to become silent.”

The Cave is an extensive natural cavern within a mountain, serving as one of the last sanctuaries for humanity during the Third Wave in The Dream Code Universe. It becomes the dwelling place for approximately 3,000 survivors following the catastrophic destruction of The Sanctuary and the emergence of the Kuro Civilization. Positioned northwest of The Sanctuary, the Cave offers a natural means of concealment from the Kuros, who lay waste to the surface world. The survivors remain concealed within the Cave for about 18 months, eventually emerging after the Kuro Civilization is wiped out by a virus in December 2045. Subsequently, they journey eastward towards the City of the Good, arriving there in March 2046.

🏔️ From the Sanctuary to the Cave

When a powerful seismic event shatters the protective integrity of The Sanctuary, it triggers the release of the Third Wave, ushering the Kuro Civilization into the world. The survivors are compelled to evacuate The Sanctuary. They undertake a journey to the Cave via train, a trip that lasts approximately one day. Prior to their departure, they salvage as many provisions and resources from The Sanctuary as they can transport. The Cave is situated roughly northwest of The Sanctuary, concealed within a massive mountain. In contrast to The Sanctuary, it is not an artificially constructed refuge but a naturally formed subterranean environment that becomes their final sanctuary during the Kuro onslaught.

🌿 The Natural Refuge

The Cave comprises a network of large, interconnected chambers naturally carved within the mountain. Its interior features:

  • Natural living spaces.
  • Areas designated for storage.
  • A substantial underground lake.
  • Natural shafts that facilitate the ingress of sunlight and air.
  • Secluded zones suitable for prolonged habitation.

The subterranean lake serves as a crucial water source for the survivors. Natural apertures in the upper sections of the cavern also allow them to observe the external environment without revealing their presence.

🕯️ Concealing the Cave

Shortly after their arrival, Master Genryu directs the survivors to seal and camouflage the entrance. Rocks, earth, debris, and vegetation are strategically placed around the opening to seamlessly integrate it with the surrounding mountainous terrain. From the outside, the Cave appears as nothing more than untouched wilderness. This concealment proves vital during the Third Wave. The Kuro Civilization sweeps across the surface, decimating the world, yet the survivors remain hidden deep within the mountain.

👥 Life in the Cave

Approximately 3,000 individuals find refuge within the Cave, including:

  • Master Genryu
  • Mitsuru
  • Ava
  • Yuki
  • Poi
  • Shika
  • Jing
  • Kamen (he meets his girl Kensa in the Cave)
  • And other survivors of good heart.

The comfortable existence they previously enjoyed during Jirkunland’s Golden Age is supplanted by a considerably more austere reality. The supplies transported from The Sanctuary gradually dwindle, necessitating careful rationing of all available resources by the survivors. Life becomes focused on survival, endurance, and remaining undetected. Master Genryu sustains the survivors’ hope, repeatedly reassuring them that the Kuro Civilization is destined to self-destruct.

🌑 The Kuro Civilization

The Cave becomes humanity’s sanctuary during the Third Wave, a period when the Kuro Civilization emerges and devastates the surface world. The Kuros had resided underground for over three millennia before venturing onto the surface. Their physiology had become highly adapted to subterranean living conditions. Following approximately 18 months of surface dwelling, a virus intrinsically linked to their ancient subterranean adaptation begins to proliferate amongst them, rapidly escalating into an epidemic. In December 2045, about 18 months after the Kuros’ initial emergence, their civilization is annihilated by the virus, marking the conclusion of the Third Wave.

🌅 Leaving the Cave

With the Kuros eradicated, the survivors are finally able to depart from their underground refuge. After spending roughly 18 months in the Cave, Master Genryu leads the survivors eastward. Their intended destination is the City of the Good, which had been prepared years prior as humanity’s ultimate sanctuary. The survivors traverse the devastated landscape on foot. In March 2046, they finally reach the City of the Good, leaving the Cave behind.

✦ The End of the Cave

The Cave represents the final phase of humanity’s struggle for survival during the Third Wave. The Sanctuary had shielded them from the initial onslaught of the catastrophe. The Cave provided refuge after The Sanctuary itself was lost. For approximately 18 months, three thousand survivors remained concealed beneath the mountains while the Kuro Civilization wreaked havoc upon the world. As the Kuros ultimately perished, the survivors emerged to commence their journey toward the City of the Good. The Cave’s narrative function concludes with their departure.

The world above had fallen silent.

The survivors could finally emerge.

And in the east, a city was waiting for them.
