Facts: My Hero Academia: Vigilantes is a spin-off manga that takes place before the events of Kōhei Horikoshi’s original series, serving as both a prequel and standalone story set in the same universe. It takes place five years before the events of the main series. Even though it was published later, the narrative itself is set in the past—it follows events and characters from earlier in the My Hero Academia world. This is why it’s called both a spin-off (a separate work) and a prequel (telling an earlier story within the same universe).

Setting

My Hero Academia: Vigilantes is intricately woven into the established universe of the main My Hero Academia series, but its narrative unfolds approximately five years prior to the events depicted in the original story. The primary stage for this tale is the sprawling, often chaotic metropolis of Naruhata. This district is characterized by a distinct lack of consistent hero presence, creating a vacuum where licensed heroes are not always readily available to intervene. It is within this environment that the phenomenon of “vigilantes” emerges – individuals who, driven by their own sense of justice, take it upon themselves to combat crime and protect the innocent outside the official hero system.

Plot

The narrative focuses on Koichi Haimawari, a seemingly ordinary college student who possesses a Quirk but is not a licensed hero. Driven by an innate desire to help those in need, Koichi utilizes his abilities to assist others whenever possible. His path takes a significant turn after he witnesses and attempts to intervene in a group of thugs harassing a street performer, only to be rescued by a seasoned vigilante known only as Knuckleduster. This pivotal encounter profoundly inspires Koichi. Motivated by the example set by Knuckleduster and with the support of his friend, Kazuho Haneyama (the street performer), Koichi makes the decision to embrace the life of a vigilante himself. Together, Koichi and Kazuho step into the shadows, navigating the dangerous and morally complex world of crime-fighting while grappling with the inherent challenges and risks associated with operating outside the legal framework of licensed heroes.

Main Characters

  • Koichi Haimawari: The protagonist of the story. Koichi is a college student who, despite his lack of official hero status, possesses a strong sense of justice and a Quirk that he uses to help others. His journey leads him to become a vigilante, dedicated to making a difference in Naruhata.
  • Kazuho Haneyama: A street performer who becomes entangled in the vigilante world after an incident involving thugs. Kazuho joins Koichi in his efforts, offering companionship, support, and a shared commitment to fighting for what is right from the fringes of society.
  • Knuckleduster: An experienced and formidable vigilante who operates within Naruhata. He serves as a mentor figure, recognizing Koichi’s potential and recruiting him and Kazuho into his clandestine fight against crime, guiding them through the perilous realities of their chosen path.

This manga delves deeply into compelling themes of heroism, the multifaceted nature of justice, and the significant moral quandaries faced by individuals who choose to operate beyond the boundaries of established law.
