Setting
In a future so distant it bleeds into myth, the Earth we knew is a fractured memory. Cataclysmic celestial bombardments have scoured the planet, leaving behind a solitary coastline, a sliver of land clinging to the edge of an ocean that whispers of oblivion. This stark, beautiful, and broken world is the stage for Land of the Lustrous. It is a realm where the very ground is a mosaic of crystalline fragments, and the air hums with an ancient, silent magic. Here, under skies that often weep with cosmic dust, dwell the Lustrous—beings born of the Earth’s enduring spirit, each an immortal embodiment of a precious gemstone. They are living jewels, their forms sculpted from sapphire, diamond, and amethyst, their existence a testament to a world reborn from ruin.
Plot
The narrative intricately follows the lives of these gem-like beings as they strive for meaning and survival. Their existence is a delicate balance, constantly threatened by the Lunarians, ethereal entities descended from the moon. The Lunarians’ motives remain shrouded in a chilling ambiguity; they relentlessly pursue the Lustrous, seeking to capture them for reasons that gnaw at the edges of comprehension. At the heart of this struggle is Phosphophyllite, or Phos, a gem of exceptional beauty but profound fragility. With a hardness that ranks a mere 3.5 on the Mohs scale, Phos is deemed too delicate for the arduous task of battle, instead assigned the solitary duty of compiling an encyclopedia of their world. Yet, beneath this quiet assignment burns a fierce yearning: to shatter the chains of their perceived weakness, to prove their worth on the battlefield, and to unearth the profound secrets that bind their existence to the Lunarians and the cataclysm that shaped their world.
Main Characters
- Phosphophyllite (Phos): The radiant protagonist, a gem of exquisite, yet perilous, softness (hardness 3.5). Initially burdened with the meticulous, solitary work of encyclopedia creation, Phos grapples with immaturity and a profound clumsiness. However, a deep-seated desire fuels their spirit—the aspiration to fight, to be recognized, and to carve out a significant place amongst their more robust peers, all while unraveling the enigmas of their unique existence.
- Kongo (Adamant): The stoic and revered leader of the Lustrous. Bearing the aura of a monastic figure, Kongo guides the gemstone beings with a wisdom that is often as enigmatic as it is profound. His pronouncements are cryptic, his detachment a shield against the eternal weight of their lives, leaving the Lustrous to decipher his intent.
- Bort: A paragon of strength and ferocity, Bort is a formidable warrior whose prowess in combat is legendary. Their sharp edges and sharper resolve make them a natural leader, embodying the protective force of the Lustrous.
- Diamond (Dia): A gem of unparalleled kindness and gentle disposition, Diamond often serves as a soft counterpoint to Bort’s unyielding nature. Their presence brings a soothing grace to the often harsh realities faced by the Lustrous.
- Cinnabar: Possessing a unique and dangerous toxic luminescence, Cinnabar presents a physical threat to those around them, a consequence of their very being. Despite this inherent danger, Cinnabar harbors a deep longing for acceptance and a place within the community.
- Aechmea: The enigmatic and calculating leader of the Lunarians. Driven by an unseen agenda, Aechmea orchestrates the pursuit and capture of the Lustrous, seemingly as a means to provoke Kongo and extract his attention, their true endgame remaining a tantalizing mystery.
Across this crystalline landscape, the series delves into the profound themes of identity, questioning what it means to be when one is immortal. It explores the relentless search for purpose in an existence that transcends the mortal coil, and probes the very nature of existence itself, particularly how the prospect of immortality warps the precious, fleeting understanding of life and the finality of death.
