Setting

Grand Blue Dreaming is primarily set in the scenic coastal region of Izu City, Japan. The narrative action largely revolves around a local diving shop aptly named “Grand Blue.” This vibrant establishment and its surrounding environs serve as the central hub for the protagonist’s college life, immersing him within a lively and often boisterous community deeply involved in both the sport of diving and an equally prominent culture of social revelry. The setting perfectly balances the allure of the ocean with the energetic chaos of youth.

Plot

The story of Grand Blue Dreaming follows Iori Kitahara, a young man embarking on his college journey with a set of earnest hopes and aspirations for a typical, studious university experience. However, his plans are rapidly derailed as he finds himself inexorably drawn into the hilariously chaotic and unpredictable lifestyle of the local diving club. Far from focusing solely on the technicalities of scuba diving, the club members seem to prioritize extravagant parties and copious amounts of alcohol over actual underwater exploration, leading to a continuous stream of comedic and wild escapades. Iori’s attempts to carve out a semblance of a normal college life are constantly undermined by the absurd antics and overwhelming enthusiasm of his newfound friends, creating a whirlwind of youthful misadventures.

Main Characters

Hajime Nojima: A self-proclaimed playboy and Iori’s classmate. Nojima constantly struggles with his romantic pursuits, often falling prey to his own misguided attempts at seduction, providing ample comedic fodder alongside Iori’s own social predicaments.

Iori Kitahara: The main protagonist and a first-year Mechanical Engineering student. Initially seeking a conventional college experience, Iori is gradually, and often unwillingly, drawn into the extreme lifestyle of the diving club, becoming the audience’s anchor in the sea of absurdities.

Chisa Kotegawa: Iori’s cousin and a fellow student. While sharing in the general college experience, Chisa often finds herself caught between Iori’s bewilderment and the club’s excesses, providing a more grounded perspective.

Nanaka Kotegawa: A skilled diving instructor at the “Grand Blue” shop. Nanaka, also Iori’s cousin, frequently attempts to moderate the club’s often rowdy and excessive behavior, acting as a voice of reason amidst the chaos.

Captain Kudō: The charismatic captain of the tennis club. Known for his flamboyant personality and his frequent, often comically executed, romantic pursuits, Kudō adds another layer of comedic rivalry and social interaction to the college setting.
