Plot Overview

NieR:Automata Ver1.1a is set on a post-apocalyptic Earth where humanity has been driven from the planet, leaving behind a devastating proxy war between YoRHa androids and Machine Lifeforms created by mysterious alien forces. The story follows YoRHa No. 2 Type B (2B), a highly skilled combat android, and YoRHa No. 9 Type S (9S), an inquisitive scanner android assigned to support her. Together, they are sent to Earth to assist the human Resistance and combat the machines that have taken control of the planet.

As their missions progress, however, the simple distinction between android and machine begins to break down. Beneath the seemingly endless conflict lies a much deeper mystery surrounding humanity, YoRHa, the machines, and the true purpose behind the war. Among the figures who become increasingly important to this story is YoRHa Type A No.2 (A2), a mysterious and highly capable android whose past and connection to YoRHa gradually reveal another side of the conflict. Her presence adds a new perspective to the story and becomes increasingly significant as the narrative unfolds.

Main Characters

  • 2B (YoRHa No. 2 Type B): A battle android specializing in close-quarters combat. Disciplined and composed, 2B follows YoRHa’s orders with unwavering determination, even as the events around her begin to challenge everything she believes about her mission.
  • 9S (YoRHa No. 9 Type S): A scanner android assigned to accompany 2B. Intelligent, curious, and analytical, 9S is particularly interested in uncovering the secrets behind the machines and the world they inhabit.
  • A2 (YoRHa Type A No.2): A powerful and enigmatic android with a complicated history involving YoRHa. A2 operates independently and carries a very different perspective on the war. Her story gradually becomes intertwined with 2B and 9S, adding greater depth to the series’ exploration of YoRHa and its true purpose.

Themes

NieR:Automata Ver1.1a explores several philosophical and emotional themes beneath its science-fiction setting:

  • Identity — Androids and machines struggle to understand who they are beyond the roles they were created to fulfill.
  • Humanity — Despite humanity’s absence, its legacy shapes nearly every aspect of the world and raises questions about what truly makes someone human.
  • Purpose — The characters are constantly confronted with questions about why they exist and whether their assigned purpose has any meaning.
  • War and Conflict — The series examines the seemingly endless cycle of violence and the consequences of fighting without fully understanding the reason behind the conflict.
  • Existence and Meaning — As the characters uncover increasingly disturbing truths, they are forced to confront questions about life, death, consciousness, and the meaning of existence.

Style

The anime combines science fiction, action, drama, and philosophical storytelling, bringing the distinctive world of the original game to life.

  • Visuals: A detailed post-apocalyptic world filled with ruined cities, abandoned structures, forests, deserts, and mysterious machine civilizations.
  • Action: Fast-paced and visually striking combat sequences that capture the spirit of the original game’s hack-and-slash gameplay.
  • Music: The acclaimed musical style of the NieR series returns, using powerful vocal performances and atmospheric compositions to heighten both the action and emotional moments.
  • Storytelling: While remaining closely connected to the original game’s world and characters, Ver1.1a introduces changes, additional perspectives, and new narrative elements that allow the story to unfold in its own way.

NieR:Automata Ver1.1a is more than a story about androids fighting machines. Beneath its spectacular battles and post-apocalyptic setting is a deeply emotional exploration of identity, purpose, humanity, loss, and the search for meaning. With 2B, 9S, and A2 at the heart of its story, the series gradually transforms a seemingly straightforward war into a much larger mystery—one that challenges both its characters and the audience to question what it truly means to exist.
