Plot Overview
Natsume’s Book of Friends Movie: Ephemeral Bond follows the gentle protagonist, Takashi Natsume, a young boy gifted—or perhaps burdened—with the ability to see and interact with spirits (yokai). His journey leads him to a remote town with deep connections to his deceased exorcist grandmother, Natsume Reiko. During his stay, Natsume encounters Yorie Tsumura, an elderly woman who knew Reiko in her youth, and through their interactions, Natsume begins to unravel long-held secrets and poignant memories from his grandmother’s past.
Concurrently, Natsume’s loyal and often boisterous spirit companion, Nyanko-sensei (also known as Madara), becomes entangled in a peculiar incident involving mysterious spirits. Inadvertently, Nyanko-sensei acquires a strange, glowing seed. This seed soon germinates and transforms into a peculiar spirit tree that takes root in Natsume’s yard. The tree’s unusual energy causes Nyanko-sensei to split into three smaller, mischievous kitten-like spirits, each embodying a fragment of his personality.
