From Up on Poppy Hill is a tale set in the vibrant port city of Yokohama, Japan, in the year 1963. The story centers on Umi Matsuzaki, a conscientious high school girl residing in a charming boarding house known as Coquelicot Manor. Every day, Umi meticulously raises a set of signal flags from her home, a daily ritual that serves as a poignant tribute to her deceased father, a sea captain. These flags convey her quiet hopes for safe voyages for all ships, a silent connection to his memory.

Umi’s predictable life takes an unexpected turn when she encounters Shun Kazama, a spirited and idealistic member of the school’s newspaper club. Their paths converge as they discover a shared passion for preserving their school’s beloved historic clubhouse, the Latin Quarter. This cherished building is slated for demolition, targeted by the influential chairman of the local school board, Tokumaru, as part of a larger redevelopment plan in anticipation of the upcoming 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Driven by a desire to protect this symbol of their school’s heritage, Umi and Shun join forces. As they navigate the complexities of their campaign to save the Latin Quarter, their investigation leads them to uncover intricate connections between their own families’ pasts. Their journey becomes a profound exploration of themes such as the clash between tradition and modernization, the enduring weight of loss, and the inevitable passage of time.
